Why should you get baptized?

Jesus was baptized. “Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him, (Matthew 3:13). Jesus is our example that baptism is important.

Jesus instructed His disciples to baptize new believers.  Jesus said,  “Go… and make Disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you,” (Matthew 28:19-20). If you have never taken this step of faith to be baptized, please obey the word of Jesus.

Baptism is an acknowledgement of your sin and your faith in Jesus Christ. Mark tells us, “Those from Jerusalem went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins,” (Mark 1:5). The Ethiopian eunuch asked Philip, “‘What hinders me from being baptized?’ Then Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may,’” (Acts 8:36-37).

If you believe God’s Word you should be baptized. Luke tells us that all believers “who Gladly received His word were baptized,” (Act 2:41).

Is baptism essential to be saved?

Baptism cannot save you because salvation is by grace apart from any work you do for God. Paul taught, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of Yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast,” (Eph. 2:8-9).

Baptism cannot save you because salvation occurs when your heart believes in Jesus and you confess Him as Lord. Paul said, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and Believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the Heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto Salvation,” (Romans 10:9-10).

Why do we get baptized in front of others?

We baptize in a public place because baptism is your confession before men that you Believe in Christ and what He has done for you. Jesus said, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.  But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven,”  (Matthew 10:32-33).

Should infants and very young children get baptized?

Children should only get baptized after they have repented of their sins and shown Fruits of that repentance like any adult.  Peter said, “Repent, and let every one of you be Baptized,” (Acts 2:38). Baptism should therefore only occur after a person has repented and confessed Him as Lord.  Infants and very young children should wait until they have had a personal conversion experience.

If an older child asks to be baptized, you should be sure that this child is old enough to truly understand what he or she is actually doing. It must be a personal decision.

What should you wear for a baptism?

Any modest apparel (Shorts are appropriate, and the church will provide you with a t-shirt on the day of your baptism).
