The sun beats down upon my head
A keen breeze whistles by
The songs of birds are in my ear
As the river slowly glides on by

‘Old Father Thames’ they call him
And today that seems quite true
As his peaceful stately progress
Follows banks and bridges through

But recently in flood and rage
He seemed a youthful sprite
As he invaded fields and homes
So terrible his might

A raging torrent, thundering down
Invading hamlet, home and town
No respect for man nor beast
All things in his way a feast
To be consumed, destroyed and tossed
It mattered not to him who lost
Their homes, the things they slaved to earn
Now damp and moldy, fit just to burn

Yet now he’s back within his banks
As though the past were dim
The lives of people he has torn
Mean nothing now to him

‘Old Father Thames’ just glides on by
His beauty is serene
As ducks and swans and water fowl
Take time to wash and preen

We sit along his banks so rich
So verdant lush and green
As kids do play and moms do chat
Creating such a peaceful scene

The Lord who made the earth and sky
The lovely river gliding by
Gives all these things for our delight
But now and then portrays his might

Nature can be somewhat harnessed
But never tamed by man
For the Lord of all creation
Remains the great I AM
